Diagnosis

Today I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. I'm stunned and angry. Angry at myself and angry at my prior doctors. I am so glad that my Nurse Practitioner to the time to listen to me last week. Thank-you for that!

About 5 years ago I went to the doctor for my yearly check-up and to get some help for minor depression and some other issues. The doctor didn't help much. I still had issues that wouldn't go away. Last year I went again to the doctor with worsening symptoms and problems. All he did was diagnose me with a Vitamin D deficiency and suggested I eat more yogurt. No change. Still tired, still itchy and still not able to loose much weight. The vitamin D did help loose some weight, and help lift my moods, but didn't help with anything else.

Last week I went in for my yearly, and finally, someone listened and had some ideas about what may be wrong. So she set me an appointment to get some blood work done which included a vitamin D test, an oral glucose tolerance test and the hemoglobin A1C test. My appointment was at 8:45am, fasting. The nurse prepped my arm and drew my blood. She ran the fasting glucose blood level test at it came in at a 246mg/dL. She was worried and ran the test again and it came in at 250 mg/dL, normal fasting levels are 110-125 mg/dL. So yes I'm a little bit stunned. When I was pregnant with my son, over 8 years ago, I was borderline gestational diabetic, but the OB said I would be fine. My NP today said that they should have treated me for diabetes then. Frustrating.

I'm so angry at myself. I should have pushed harder and made myself heard. I should have taken better care of myself. I should have gone to the doctor more often. Lots of should haves. But, instead of being so focused on the should haves, I need to focus on the now and tomorrow. Learn and grow. Win this war. Become a better me, not only for myself, but for my family. Gonna do this!

I'll be going in sometime next week I hope to the Rocky Mountain Diabetes Center once my hemoglobin A1C results come back. I've been doing a lot of reading online to become more familiar with what I need to do each day to win the war. So until I get to RMDC, I'm going to set myself a few goals.

1. Protein and non starchy vegetable diet. Fruits too.
2. No Dr. Pepper. :( That's going to be a hard one!
3. Go on walks every night.
4. Don't stress out and keep calm.

I'm going to do this, I'm going to win, I'm going to keep on fighting each and every day!
